MESH members had a lively discussion on Saturday June 3rd about their experiences and suggestions for managing ME and improving health at no cost. These are all things we can do for ourselves.
Top Ten Tips for Managing ME that cost nothing
- Relaxation. Practice and you can become an expert. Members found relaxation tapes, learning to meditate, self-hypnosis and visualisation all effective. Books and tapes are available free to members from the MESH library. When we are in a deeply relaxed state, studies show that more blood reaches the brain.
- Keep a Diary. Keeping a brief daily record can identify trends, check on symptoms and give you evidence to use when seeing doctors etc. Also useful to look back and see progress and for off-loading how you feel on bad days!
- Routine. Develop a routine that suits you. By becoming an expert on ourselves we can learn to pace ourselves, listen to our bodies and say no to unhelpful demands.
- Dowsing. Effective dowsing rods can be made from two metal coathangers (or borrowed from the MESH library). You can use these to identify electro-magnetic fields and move furniture and beds to avoid spending time in these areas. See 'Sleeping in a Safe Place?' in the MESH library.
- Diet. Identify food intolerances by cutting out suspicious foods one by one (wheat, yeast, sugar, dairy products etc.) for a week or more and checking your responses. Reduce as much as possible your intake of chemicals by eating organic or simple (not 'convenience') foods and peeling fruit and vegetables. Try a food combining diet or an anti-candida diet (books in the MESH library)
- Keep Positive. Develop ways that suit you. Some members found spiritual healing and their faith helpful. Sitting in the sunshine (weather permitting); writing down disappointments and upsets and throwing them away; laughter (choosing to watch or listen to the lighter side of life); weeding out friends that depress you and concentrate on those that support. Become a pen- or email- pal.
- Breathing. Is your breathing shallow? With practice you can change from 14-16 shallow breaths a minute to 6-7 deep breaths. If you have a low body temperature and cold feet you may be surprised at the results. One of our members has made a marked improvement using this technique we will report further.
- Drinking Water. Drinking eight pints a day is recommended for de-toxifying and flushing the body it may sound a lot but your body soon gets used to it!
- Helpful Exercise. Some exercise can be beneficial if done carefully. Members found gentle yoga, back and neck exercises and massage (designed to help the lymphatic system) useful.
- Consider alternatives. Has your doctor run tests for other conditions that might be present? These could include anaemia, depression or poor thyroid function.
A big thank you to all those who contributed to this meeting. Remember, there are a lot of books and tapes in our library that can help you build up your knowledge and expertise. Become an expert in your own body and how it functions.
